A “single palm tree boat” refers to a traditional dugout canoe made by hollowing out the trunk of a single large palm tree, a practice still seen in riverine regions like Bangladesh. Locally, such boats are often called a donga. Craftsmen select a straight, mature palm tree and carefully carve out the inside, leaving the outer shell intact to form the hull. The natural curve and grain of the tree provide inherent strength and stability, making the boat well-suited for calm rivers, wetlands, and shallow waters. After carving, the hollowed trunk is often fire-dried—gentle heat is applied to remove moisture, harden the wood, reduce cracking, and slightly shape the hull—improving durability and buoyancy. These boats are simple but highly functional, used for daily transport, fishing, and carrying goods, requiring minimal tools and no nails or joints. Their design reflects centuries of indigenous knowledge, optimizing local materials to create a lightweight, stable, and low-cost vessel perfectly adapted to river-based life.
