World Wants Indian Mangoes, But India Exports Less Than 1% of Its Crop

India grows more mangoes than any other country in the world, producing nearly 40% of the global supply. Yet, despite strong international demand, less than 1% of India's total mango production is exported—a statistic that has surprised consumers and trade experts across several countries. The issue has gained renewed attention after discussions around India's export potential and a successful sea shipment of Uttar Pradesh's Dashehari and Langra mangoes to Dubai highlighted the gap between production and exports.

Many countries are eager to import premium Indian varieties such as Alphonso, Kesar, Dashehari, Langra and Chausa. However, most of India's mango harvest is consumed domestically, where demand remains exceptionally high. In addition, exporters face challenges such as strict international quality standards, limited irradiation and treatment facilities, logistics costs and short shelf life, all of which restrict exports. As a result, countries that produce far fewer mangoes, including Mexico, Peru and Brazil, export significantly larger volumes in several international markets.

The discussion has intensified as India records another strong export season, with shipments reaching more than 45 countries and demand rising in markets such as the United States and the Middle East. APEDA and exporters are working to expand overseas sales through improved logistics, new shipping routes and market access. Experts believe that if infrastructure and export facilities improve, India could substantially increase its share of the global mango trade while giving farmers access to better international prices.

The revelation that the world's largest mango producer exports only a tiny fraction of its harvest has sparked widespread debate online, with many calling it one of India's biggest untapped agricultural opportunities.
