Male rosy boas have small structures near their tails called spurs, which are actually remnants of hind legs from their evolutionary past. While modern snakes don’t have visible legs, these tiny “claws” are a leftover from ancestors that once walked on land.

During courtship, males use these spurs to gently stimulate the female, helping initiate mating behavior. It’s a subtle but important part of how they communicate, since snakes rely more on touch and chemical signals than visual cues.

These boas are slow moving, non venomous snakes found in dry regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. They spend much of their time hidden under rocks or in burrows, coming out mainly at night to hunt small rodents and reptiles.

Despite their simple appearance, features like these spurs show how much of their ancient anatomy still remains. It’s a small detail, but it connects modern snakes to their evolutionary history.
