Owls Are Secretly Very Into Personal Hygiene

An owl's feathers are engineered for silent flight, with specialized edges that break up turbulence and eliminate the sound of moving air. Keeping that system functional requires serious maintenance. Unlike most birds, owls lack a standard preen gland, so they cannot coat their feathers in protective oil. Instead they rely on powder down, tiny feathers that crumble into a fine dust used to clean and condition the plumage. Bathing loosens dirt, debris, and parasites that powder down alone cannot remove. Without regular maintenance, feathers break down, flight becomes noisier, and hunting efficiency drops. For a predator that depends entirely on silent approach, feather condition is not cosmetic. It is survival.
