The Day Bombers Dropped Food Instead of Bombs

At the end of World War II, with the war officially over on May 8th, millions in Europe were starving. In a rare act of compassion, American B-17s and British Lancaster bombers replaced bombs with food. Flying dangerously low at just 200 feet, crews risked their lives to drop rations to the desperate people below. German soldiers agreed not to fire — some even waved as the planes passed.
