On a track bike, nothing helps you except your legs. There’s no freewheel, no gears, and a high gear ratio, which means starting from zero is brutally difficult. The moment the race begins, the rider has to generate enormous torque to overcome inertia — with absolutely no mechanical assistance.

Because the bike can’t coast and the gear is so tall, the first few pedal strokes feel heavy and sluggish. The cyclist is pushing against maximum resistance until enough speed builds up for the wheels to spin smoothly. This explosive start is why track sprinters train like powerlifters: strength, acceleration, and technique all collide in the first few seconds.
