JCB Hunts BMW's Record
CarHero007
JCB is chasing down BMW's 20-year-old hydrogen speed record with a machine built to demolish it—not just beat it. This August at Bonneville Salt Flats, the same driver who shattered JCB's own diesel record in 2006 returns to make history twice over.
BMW's H2R hydrogen car hit 302 km/h in 2004 using a modified V12, becoming the fastest hydrogen combustion vehicle ever built—a record that has stood unbroken for over two decades. What most people don't know is JCB already smashed a 33-year-old diesel land speed record back in 2006, driven by Andy Green, the only human to break the sound barrier on land. JCB's new Hydromax streamliner combines two engines for 1,600 horsepower, already clocking speeds past 334 km/h in UK testing—and it's built from the same technology powering JCB's excavators.
This August, Green returns to Bonneville aiming to bury BMW's record and prove JCB's dominance in speed, not just construction.
