Dhurbe the Elephant Shocks Nepal Again, Family Tragedy Renews Human-Wildlife Debate
One of South Asia's most feared wild elephants has once again made headlines after a heartbreaking incident in Nepal's Chitwan district. The elephant, known as Dhurbe, allegedly entered a home near Chitwan National Park and killed a young woman and her son. The incident has shocked local communities because the same family had already lost two other members to the very same elephant more than a decade ago, despite relocating to another area in search of safety.
According to Chitwan National Park officials, Dhurbe has now been linked to at least 25 human deaths since 2010, making it one of the deadliest wild elephants in Nepal's history. The elephant has been tracked for years using radio and satellite collars, but authorities say preventing encounters remains difficult as it continues to move between forests and nearby settlements.
The latest attack has reignited debate over how governments should handle dangerous wild animals while also protecting endangered species. In the past, Nepal even launched a large-scale operation involving the army to locate Dhurbe, but the elephant survived and later reappeared. Wildlife officials are now planning to fit the animal with a new tracking collar and trim its tusks again to improve monitoring and reduce future risks.
The incident has triggered an emotional response across social media, with many expressing sympathy for the affected family and calling for stronger measures to prevent human-wildlife conflict around protected forests.
