China Just Sank 2,000 Computers Into The Ocean - And It Might Be Genius

China is putting powerful AI computers around 35 meters underwater off the coast of Shanghai.

The computers are sealed inside waterproof capsules, connected on the ocean floor, and used as an underwater data center. China Telecom is already using the system for real-world computing work.

Why put computers underwater?

One of the biggest challenges with data centers is cooling. Servers generate huge amounts of heat, and traditional cooling systems can consume a major portion of a data center’s electricity.

Underwater, the surrounding seawater can naturally help remove that heat.

The system is also powered largely by offshore wind, with more than 95% of its electricity described as clean energy.

Microsoft previously experimented with underwater servers through Project Natick, but ended the project in 2024. China is now taking a similar idea and using it as an actual commercial system rather than just an experiment.

So is putting AI infrastructure at the bottom of the ocean a genius solution — or a risky bet?
