She FAINTED Inside The Pool With No One Nearby... 😱😳

Athlete: Anita Alvarez

Anita Álvarez (USA artistic swimmer) fainted in the pool right after finishing her solo routine at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships. The moment her performance ended, she didn’t resurface normally and instead stayed underwater, drifting and sinking, which instantly looked “wrong” compared to how athletes usually come up for air after a routine. Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, noticed it immediately from the deck, jumped straight into the pool without hesitation, reached Anita underwater, grabbed her, and pulled her up to the surface, then helped get her to the pool edge so medical staff could take over. The whole rescue happened in seconds, and it was a massive shock because it went from “end of routine” to “life-threatening” super fast.
What caused it was basically a sudden blackout from extreme physical stress, which can happen in artistic swimming because it’s one of the most demanding sports for breath control: you’re doing intense full-body movements, often with limited breathing, plus pressure, fatigue, and sometimes dehydration/overheating. In simple terms: her body ran out of oxygen at the worst moment, her brain “shut off” for safety, and she passed out. Fuentes was able to save her because she’s trained, experienced, and she recognized the signs instantly—she didn’t wait for lifeguards because every second mattered underwater. Anita was treated right away, recovered, and later said she was okay, but the incident became a huge reminder of how brutal and dangerous elite breath-control sports can be when the body reaches its limit.
