After Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump to act against the Houthis, the U.S. reportedly moved toward launching airstrikes. Target lists were approved and bombs were being loaded onto American warplanes before Trump called off the operation.

Saudi Arabia is seeking U.S. help as the Houthis expand toward the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait and threaten Red Sea shipping and Saudi interests. The Houthis have also made significant territorial gains along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

But striking the Houthis could open another U.S. military front while Washington is already fighting Iran. Trump ultimately decided against the operation, leaving Saudi Arabia to deal with the Houthi advance largely through regional forces and U.S. intelligence support.
