Nepal Flood Isn’t Over! A New Lake Could Trigger Another Flood 🚨

Nepal’s devastating flood may not be the end of the story. A new barrier lake formed after the glacier and rock collapse has raised concerns about possible secondary flooding in the Himalayas.

On August 26, a major ice-rock avalanche and debris flow triggered catastrophic flooding along the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system. The debris blocked river flow and contributed to the formation of temporary lakes upstream. Satellite imagery has since revealed newly formed water bodies, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation.

The science is frighteningly simple:
Glacier collapse → debris blocks river → water accumulates → temporary lake forms → barrier failure can create another flood wave.

However, this does not mean another disaster on the scale of the August 26 flood is certain. Experts and authorities have been monitoring the lakes because the risk depends on how the barriers and water levels evolve.

This event highlights an important lesson for UPSC aspirants: Himalayan disasters are not only about rainfall. Glaciers, landslides, debris flows, temporary lakes, river systems, satellite monitoring and early-warning systems all matter.

Watch till the end to understand how one mountain collapse can create a second disaster risk.
