This chokepoint connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the wider Indian Ocean, making it critical for global shipping.

The timing is especially significant because Iran is already putting pressure on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz. If Iran-aligned forces gain leverage over both chokepoints, Tehran and its regional partners could potentially pressure two major maritime routes.
