The bearded vulture has a very unique diet. Most of its food consists of bones. It carries large bones high into the air and drops them onto rocks to break them, then eats the pieces. It especially prefers marrow-filled bones because they are highly nutritious. Its stomach acid is extremely strong, allowing it to digest bones completely. It mainly feeds on carrion (dead animals) and rarely hunts live prey. This makes it one of the few animals in nature that can consume and digest bones.

Sakallı akbabanın beslenmesi oldukça farklıdır. Beslenmesinin büyük kısmını kemikler oluşturur. Büyük kemikleri alıp yüksekten kayalıklara bırakarak kırar ve parçalarını yer. Özellikle ilik içeren kemikleri tercih eder çünkü çok besleyicidir. Çok güçlü mide asidi sayesinde kemikleri tamamen sindirebilir. Genellikle ölü hayvan kalıntılarıyla beslenir, nadiren canlı av yakalar. Bu özelliğiyle doğada kemikleri değerlendiren nadir canlılardan biridir.
