🇬🇧 The black-winged stilt, also called "long-legged sandpiper" (长脚鹬) in Chinese, is a wading bird known as one of the most elegant and devoted parents in the avian world. It possesses unique anatomical proportions—its legs are proportionally the longest relative to its body among all birds in the world, second only to the flamingo, allowing it to venture deep into muddy bottoms and shallow wetlands to forage for food. When a storm, strong wind, or torrential rain approaches, the small chicks, which do not yet have waterproof plumage and can easily perish from hypothermia, instinctively run to their parent. The adult bird spreads its wings and literally "shelters" its entire brood under its belly, lowering itself closer to the ground to completely shield them from the cold and water. The parents defend their nest and chicks with incredible ferocity—upon the appearance of a predator, they often feign a broken wing, limping and emitting loud sounds to draw the danger toward themselves and save their young.
