BSNL's ₹1.34 Lakh Phone Isn't for Everyone – Indians comparing it with iPhone! Here's Why It Has Gone Viral
A phone priced higher than many premium smartphones has become one of India's most talked-about technology stories this week. State-owned telecom company BSNL has introduced a satellite phone costing ₹1,34,166, surprising many people who initially assumed it was a luxury smartphone. The model name is Inmarsat IsatPhone. In reality, the device has no app store, high-end camera, or modern smartphone features. Instead, its biggest strength is that it can make calls even in places where there is no mobile tower or cellular network.
Unlike conventional mobile phones, the new device connects directly to satellites using the Inmarsat satellite communication network. This allows communication from remote mountains, forests, deserts, offshore waters, and disaster-hit regions where normal telecom services are unavailable. Because of this specialised technology, the handset is significantly more expensive than regular smartphones.
The satellite phone is not being launched for the general public. According to BSNL, it is primarily intended for defence personnel, disaster management agencies, maritime operators, emergency response teams, and government departments that require uninterrupted communication during emergencies. In India, satellite phones also require government approval because of national security regulations.
The announcement has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users joking that the phone costs more than several flagship smartphones. Technology experts, however, point out that buyers are paying for reliable connectivity rather than premium consumer features.
