Ram Mandir Donations Drop Sharply as SIT Probe into Alleged Theft Shakes Devotee Confidence

Donations at the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya have reportedly witnessed a sharp decline following the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged embezzlement of devotees' offerings. According to reports, temple authorities have observed that daily donations have fallen by nearly 90 percent in recent weeks, with many devotees expressing concern over the controversy surrounding the handling of temple funds.

The decline comes after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an SIT investigation into allegations that cash and valuables donated by devotees were being misappropriated. The probe has so far resulted in the arrest of several individuals associated with the counting and handling of donations. Investigators have alleged that weaknesses in security protocols and repeated violations of standard operating procedures enabled the alleged theft to continue over an extended period.

According to the SIT's preliminary findings, several serious lapses were identified in the way donations were collected, counted and deposited. Investigators reportedly found gaps in CCTV surveillance, inadequate monitoring of donation boxes and poor oversight during the counting process. The report has recommended significant reforms in the temple's financial management system to restore accountability and public trust.

As the investigation gathered pace, Ayodhya Police also questioned senior members of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust regarding the procedures followed for receiving and depositing donations. Authorities have sought bank records and financial documents as part of a wider effort to trace the movement of temple funds and determine whether institutional lapses contributed to the alleged embezzlement.

The controversy has triggered widespread discussion among devotees and on social media. Many users expressed disappointment that donations made out of faith could allegedly be misused. Some devotees have reportedly chosen to postpone donations until the investigation is completed and stronger safeguards are introduced. Others, however, appealed to people not to lose faith in the temple itself, arguing that the alleged actions of a few individuals should not affect religious devotion.

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has maintained that the temple remains committed to complete transparency. The Trust has assured devotees that it is cooperating fully with investigators and has emphasized that the ongoing probe is intended to identify those responsible for the alleged irregularities. Following the controversy, senior office-bearers of the Trust also stepped down to facilitate an impartial investigation.

The issue has also reached the judiciary. A Public Interest Litigation seeking a CBI investigation into the alleged donation scam was recently mentioned before the Supreme Court. However, the court declined to grant an urgent hearing, stating that there was no immediate need for expedited judicial intervention while the investigation was already underway.

Political reactions have also intensified. Opposition parties have demanded greater transparency in the management of temple donations, while leaders of the ruling establishment have maintained that the state government itself initiated the SIT probe to ensure accountability. Analysts believe the government's decision to order an investigation at an early stage reflects an attempt to restore public confidence and protect the credibility of one of India's most significant religious institutions.

The Ram Mandir has received thousands of crores of rupees in donations since its inauguration, making financial transparency a matter of national importance. With devotees now closely watching the outcome of the investigation, many believe the manner in which the alleged irregularities are addressed will play a crucial role in rebuilding trust. Whether donations return to previous levels may ultimately depend on how effectively authorities implement reforms and reassure devotees that every contribution is being handled with honesty and accountability.
