A Chinese humanoid robot has completed a 100-metre sprint faster than Usain Bolt’s world-record time, creating a historic moment at the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.

The robot, named Tiangong Ultra, finished the race in 9.39 seconds. Bolt’s official human world record is 9.58 seconds, set at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009. Another Chinese robot, Lightning, also crossed the line faster than Bolt’s benchmark, recording 9.47 seconds.

Tiangong Ultra was developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. During the race, it overtook Lightning near the finishing section and maintained enough speed to secure victory. The result demonstrated a dramatic improvement from the previous edition, when Tiangong Ultra reportedly needed 21.50 seconds to cover the same distance.

Despite the remarkable speed, the robots showed that control remains a major challenge. After crossing the finish line, several machines were unable to slow down smoothly and crashed into protective foam barriers placed beyond the track.

The event was held at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval and included more than 2,000 robots representing hundreds of teams. Competitions covered running, jumping, football, boxing and practical industrial tasks.

However, Tiangong Ultra did not race Usain Bolt directly. Its time surpassed his recorded performance. The result also does not replace Bolt’s official athletics record because robots and humans compete in separate categories. Still, it marks the first major occasion on which a humanoid robot publicly completed 100 metres faster than the fastest officially recorded human.
