Instead of opening like a conventional car door, the doors on this 1954 Kaiser Darrin slide forward and disappear almost completely into the front fenders. The unusual design gives the sports car one of the most recognizable entry systems of its era.
Each door travels along a track built into the body, allowing it to retract into a pocket inside the front fender. This eliminates the outward swing of a hinged door and allows occupants to open the car even when there is very little space beside it.
Designed by Howard “Dutch” Darrin, the Kaiser Darrin was introduced for the 1954 model year and became one of the earliest American production fiberglass sports cars. Its distinctive sliding doors were among several unconventional design choices that made the short-lived model stand apart from other American cars of the 1950s.
