India dominated the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, reaching 288/2 in 73 overs before bad light and rain brought an early close to play. After opting to bat in their landmark 600th Test, India lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for 32 due to an unfortunate run-out, but Devdutt Padikkal seized his opportunity at No. 3 by striking his maiden Test century, anchoring the innings with a fluent, unbeaten 131 off 178 balls. He found solid support in KL Rahul, who compiled a composed 77 before retiring hurt due to cramps after their 150-run second-wicket partnership. Prabath Jayasuriya provided Sri Lanka’s sole bowling breakthrough by removing Shubman Gill for 16, leaving Padikkal alongside Rishabh Pant (27*) to guide India to a commanding position at stumps.
